Propaganda Pride Police

Text & Photos by Fred Berger

This vertical Black & White photo depicts a beautiful androgynous young man wearing a black
leather police cap with badge, a black leather choker with spiked studs and metal leash ring,
black fishnet gloves that extend up to the elbows, and a black leather wrist band with spikes.
He is shirtless and holds a silver phallic-shaped vibrator at almost chin level. His mouth opens
sensuously as he stares cross-eyed at the vibrator, which is about 8 inches (.203 meter) long.
His black hair is fairly short and he’s very pale. He wears a little eyeliner and eyebrow pencil.
He is visible from the waist up. Behind him is a white brick wall and a large horizontal
ventilation pipe suspended from the ceiling. The scene is illuminated by two studio lights.

Having originated in New York’s early ‘80s punk rock scene, which was a bastion of straight male ultra machismo, Propaganda had evolved into a queer-curious periodical by the mid-1990s. It was a time when the goth scene was being inundated with twink and trans club kids, and the most drop-dead gorgeous among them inevitably found their way onto its glossy pages. They were simultaneously photogenic and uninhibited, and therefore made the perfect models for the magazine’s increasingly risqué themes.

This horizontal Black & White photo depicts the same model crouching on the floor. He is
dressed the same way as in the previous photo. He is visible from the crotch up. He wears a
black leather thong, black leather garter belt, and black fishnet stockings. He looks at the
camera, with his right arm extended towards his right, and although his right hand is not
visible, it seems it must be grabbing onto something, perhaps the railing of the stairway at the
left of the photo. His left elbow rests on his left thigh, and his left arm is only visible from the
shoulder to the upper forearm. Behind him is the same white brick wall, as well as two
horizontal water pipes.

One such creature of the night was Louis, the last of the Propaganda supermodels. He first modeled for me in early 2001 and was an instant sensation. The photos featured here are from that shoot, which appeared in a pictorial entitled “Police State” in the Winter 2001-2002 issue of the magazine. A number of heterosexual men told me they’d turn gay just for him, and likewise there were lesbians who said they would turn straight on that individual basis as well. Such confessions, which have also applied to several other models in Propaganda, are a tribute to its androgynous and pansexual appeal.

This vertical color photo depicts the same model. He wears the black leather police cap,
choker, and wristband from the previous photos. In this photo he is not wearing the black
fishnet arm gloves, and he is wearing a red latex tank top. His right hand is holding the metal
leash ring of the choker, and his left hand is pressed against the left side of his chest. His head
is turned slightly to his right, but his gaze is toward to camera. He snarls slightly, revealing his
teeth. There is a metal spike post just below his lower lip. His makeup consists of black
eyeliner, black eyebrow pencil, and a black lipstick outline of his lips. The same white brick wall
is in the background.
